Captured in the spring of 2025. Laguna Beach.
California sunsets often appear red due to the scattering of sunlight by the atmosphere. When the sun is low on the horizon, its light passes through a thicker layer of the atmosphere compared to when it’s overhead. This longer path scatters shorter blue and violet wavelengths out of view, leaving longer red and orange wavelengths to dominate. Dust, smoke, and air pollution, common in California due to wildfires and urban activity, enhance this effect by further scattering shorter wavelengths and intensifying red hues. Coastal haze and marine aerosols can also amplify the vividness of these colors.
