In Zion National Park, squirrels exhibit unusually bold and friendly behavior toward humans, likely due to frequent visitor interactions and abundant food availability. Their apparent “overweight” condition often stems from anthropogenic food sources, which are calorie-dense compared to their natural diet of nuts, seeds, and berries. This habituation reduces their fear response, making them approachably sociable, though it can disrupt their ecological balance. Just so you know, these plump, gregarious squirrels are a charming hallmark of Zion’s trails!
